because settling down is a whole new adventure

Today’s Challenge: Just take up space.

March 29, 2022

I took today as a sick day from work.

[Whispers]: I’m not sick.

So often, we take a sick day when we are already sick and depleted and rundown. After enduring weeks and weeks of stress and mental overload, we finally admit defeat and take a day. And usually, at least in my case and that of my mama friends, that ‘sick’ day is used to tackle the ever-multiplying items on the to-do list. I don’t rest. I don’t address my depletion or rundown-ness. Instead, I fill that precious string of hours with all the chores and tasks I can think of, in hopes of clearing that giant list, even if only for a moment.

Vaccines Vs Vanity: My Quest for a New Happy Place

September 30, 2021

Ah, the hair salon. A woman’s happy place. Where else can you go and sit for 3 hours, enjoy some pleasant conversation AND a scalp massage, and come away feeling all shiny and new?

It’s been nearly four months since I visited a salon. Not because I couldn’t get an appointment – I’ve booked two, but cancelled when I learned that the stylists either hadn’t been vaccinated or wouldn’t disclose that information. One seemed well and truly offended that I would ask in the first place. Through friends and colleagues, I’ve found three more stylists, only to learn that they, too, were choosing not to be vaccinated.

Have I inadvertently stumbled upon a niche of anti-vaxxers?

The Unexpected Side Effect of Achieving a Big Goal

September 1, 2021

Goals excite me.

Like, a lot.

I can’t think of a time in my life that I wasn’t working towards a goal. Some were small, like learning how to make a mean mushroom risotto or creating a product to sell on Teachers Pay Teachers. Others were considerably bigger and more time-consuming, like training for a half-marathon and writing a novel.

(Er, not simultaneously.)

Rockin’ my socks for World Down Syndrome Day 🫶 #teachersofinstagram #worlddownsyndromeday #rockyoursocks #seetheability
Learned a few things on my family’s March Break Learned a few things on my family’s March Break trip to Mexico…

1. Turns out children don’t suddenly morph into adventurous foodies just because they deplane in another country.
2. Finished a novel in a day and then had to resort to audiobooks. Not a horrible thing, but not nearly as satisfying as holding a paperback. (Anyone else? Or is that just a me thing?)
3. Top of my list of favourite self-care habits is journalling. What on earth possessed me to leave home for a week without it???
4. So. Delicious.
5. I don’t look at other women in their bathing suits and think mean things. What ever gave me the idea that they think mean things about how I look in my bathing suit?

What lessons did you learn from your Spring Break this year? ☀️
